This technique was developed by an American chiropractor named Michael Leahy and targets soft tissue. http://www.activerelease.com

Active release technique (ART) demonstration on the infraspinatus muscle (rotator cuff muscle).

What is an ART treatment like?

It’s a technique that treats different muscles, tendons and ligaments involving muscular work in a targeted and active way. Every session is a combination of examination and treatment. The chiropractor uses his or her hands to evaluate the texture, tightness and movement of muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia and nerves. Abnormal tissues are treated by combining precisely directed tension with very specific patient movements. More than 500 ART treatment protocols are taught to accurately assess and treat dysfunctions.

Beneficial effects of ART treatments

  • Increases flexibility and elasticity of fibrous scar tissue and muscle fibers
  • Increases oxygen supply to muscles by promoting better blood circulation
  • Decreases muscle tension
  • Increases range of motion
  • Promotes optimal and rapid healing
